Finding Targeted Keyword
Phrases Your Competitors Miss

By Daria Goetsch

Find= ing keyword phrases your competition is missing is easier than you might think. Combinations of two and three word phrases are often overlooked by your competitors when vying for the top competitive terms. This missed opportunity may be a benefit to you to overcome your competition in the search engine rankings.

Think Like A Searcher - Study Your Target Audience<= /b>
Really look at the audience you want to bring to your website. Are there terms you might not ordinarily use, or that your competitors use, that would work for a small portion of visitors? Remember that single words tend to be more competitive. Find two and three word phrases that would work for a searcher looking for your website topic. If your visitors usually search on "vertical widgets", look at "horizontal widgets" as well. Dig deep to find terms that might not be obvious to you. Be sure to focus your terms on the actual topic of your website, and terms that people would really search for. Have another person compile a list of keyword phrases used to find your website or product. You'd be surprised at the number of variations two minds can come up with instead of one. Think like a searcher - not a website owner.

View Your Competitor's
Source Code And Content = For Keyword Phrases

Viewing your competitor's source code is very easy and a good way to see what keyword phrases (if any) they are using. Using your browser, view the source code of their page. The title and meta tags should contain the same keywords or variations of keyword phrases if the competitor's website is optimized. Look over the web page content as well as for keyword phrases worked into the text, image alt text, headings and hyperlinks of the pages. If their pages are not optimized you may gain an even bigger edge on the competition by optimizing your web pages.

Using Keyword Tools To Find Variations Of Keyword P= hrases
The Overture Suggestion Tool will provide keyword variations. You can find the tool at http://www.= content.overture.com/d/USm/ays/index.jhtml

Clicking on the suggestion tool link will bring up a window that allows you to search for terms and variations of terms. Begin with your list and see how many variations come up with the results. You might be surprised at the popularity of some of the search variations you see. Be sure to add you new keyword phrases to your list.

WordTracker is a keyword tool as well, you can purchase a yearly subscription or even a one day subscription. Learn more about it here: http://www.wordtr= acker.com/

Search On Keyword Phrases In The Search Engines=
Using your expanded list of keyword phrases, search for those terms in the search engine databases. Note the number of search engine results. The more results, typically the more competitive the term. See the differences in number of search results for plural versions as opposed to singular versions of your keywords in each engine. Note the descriptions that the search engine results bring up - are there any keyword phrases there that might apply to your website? Don't forget the ads Google displays in their search results. Study the ads that come up with your search terms as well. While you are searching on your keyword phrases, check your competitor's ranking, along with the new keyword phrase variations you come up with through the Overture Keyword and WordTracker tools.

Add Keywords Reflecting Your Local Cities And State=
You can also target local areas by including them in your title/meta tags and text of your web pages. List only the cities and state you reside in and/or provide services to. You never know who will be looking for a local contact producer of "blue widgets" in your city or state. Some people prefer to work with a local company. Adding in those type of specifics, even on your contact page with your local information, can pull in traffic your local competitors are missing.

Check Your Site Statistics
Last but certainly not least, check your search engine stats program or raw server logs to see what terms your visitors are using to find your website. There may be combinations of words your visitors are using you have not thought of or that may not be in the content of your pages.

Incorporate Keyword Phrases Into Content Of Your We= b Pages
Once you have your list of varied keyword phrases, work them into your web page. Incorporating these terms into your web pages should "make sense", in other words, they should read well and not sound "spammy". Most of all, they should realistically be part of the content of the page, not placed there only because you need them in the content. Have another person read your copy to see if it sounds reasonable to them.

Keyword Variations Make A Difference
Don't miss out on the keywords your competitors might miss. Those extra keywords could translate into profits and increased viewing of your website by visitors who might otherwise not find you.

SEO Writing Strategies for Graphic-Oriented Sites
By Karon Thackston

As a= copywriter, I'd love to tell you that every site on the Web needs tons of copy. However, the simple truth is not all do. Many sites simply produce better sales when they use more graphics than words. Since search engines are hungry for words you simply have to use copy if you plan to get ranked high. Quite a dilemma, isn't it?

So what do you do if you're a graphic designer, if you sell jewelry, or if you have another site that needs more pictures than copy? Don't despair. There are some strategies that can help you reach a happy medium satisfying both your visitors and the engines.

1. Use Descriptions - Place keyworded de= scriptions under each graphic on your pages. Just a sentence or two for each one can add up and give you enough room to achieve good keyword saturation.

2. Break the Copy Into Sections - Instea= d of having all 250-350 words of copy in one place, break your copy into small sections. For example, place a headline and three sentences at the top of the page, a few words under your bottom navigation bar, and a short paragraph above your "Order Now" link. The engines will find the words regardless of where on the page they are, but your visitors won't be overwhelmed by seeing all the copy in one place.

Put Your Website Submission on Auto-Pilot!

Your site will be submitted once a month to 1,500 search engines, announcement services, and classifieds for a whole year. Also, with just one click you can do a re-submission of your site any time you want. For example, if you are updating your site often, you can re-submit every time you change it. Every submission produces a detailed report of the results.

3. Don't Neglect ALT Tags - Don't abuse = them, either! ALT tags (technically known as image alt attributes) are designed to give short descriptions of graphics on your page. They are read to those who can't see well (when they use special text-to-speech software). Abusing ALT tags by stuffing them full of arbitrary keywords or extremely long descriptions is frowned upon by the engines. However, feel free to assign a short keyword phrase that describes each graphic you have.

4. Go Below the Fold - Copy can always b= e placed "below the fold." This term is used to describe the section of your index page that is not visible when the page first loads. In order to see it, the visitor would have to scroll vertically. If you've designed your index page to be fully visible without scrolling, consider using the space below the design to insert your copy.

5. Use the Sidebar - If your site design= uses a sidebar for the navigation links, use the empty space for short bits of copy. Even the statement "Order ________ Now" will give you one more instance of keyword placement.

6. Create Bulleted Lists - Many people d= on't perceive lists as copy. For this reason, you can use bulleted lists (or numbered lists) where traditional "sentence" copy wouldn't work. Tip: Instead of creating a list that reads:

We meet all your ____ needs by:

=B7 offering the lowest price.
=B7 providing first-rate service.
=B7 shipping your order in just 24 hours.

Create a list that reads like this:

At ABC Company, we offer you:

=B7 the lowest price on ______.
=B7 first-rate service. Ask us any questions you have about ____.
=B7 shipping of your _____ in just 24 hours.

See the difference? More keywords in the same amount of copy.

If you use a little creativity, you can get enough keyword saturation in your copy without it cluttering up your site. This is sure to please both the search engines and your site visitors.

Turning your website into a
p= rofitable online business

When the Internet was first launched back in the early 1970s, it included only a few computers and was used mainly by researchers. Today, more than 30 years later, the Internet has evolved into a global network connecting over a hundred million computers used by people and companies all over the world. While the Internet started out as a technical research project with few, if any, commercial applications, it is now quickly becoming the single largest market in the world. The number of users is expected to reach one billion within the next few years and online sales will probably approach or surpass offline sales by the end of the decade.

One of things that makes the Internet such as interesting market is the fact that it is open to anyone. While offline sales often requires a large organisation and costly marketing efforts in order to be successful, Internet users can easily find their way to any website with only a few clicks. Since a majority of all webpages are not created by companies or manufacturers, a new market that is growing very rapidly is the online affiliate market.

By selling third party products, any website with a large number of visitors can quickly be turned into a profitable online business. All you need to do to become a successful affiliate is to find a product that matches your visitors and an affiliate program that offers a good commission per sold unit. There are affiliate programs for almost anything from computers and books to anti-virus software. Electronically delivered products such as software do offer some considerable advantages though. Since software and other electronic products can easily be copied there are no production costs per sold unit. This usually results in very high commission rates for affiliates. Electronic products are also easier to sell online than other products, resulting in much larger sales volumes. Since more and more software vendors are now launching affiliate programs the software affiliate market is growing rapidly. With millions of new internet users connecting every month this niche is expected to grow even more quickly in the future and affiliate programs could easily become a the most important source of income for many website owners.

Although there are all kinds of software available to affiliates through affiliate programs, most website visitors are intermediate computer users not looking for a particular product. These visitors, like all computer users, are often interested in improving their computers in general and protecting their files and data from viruses and other disasters. Consequently, one product category that most visitors will find interesting is performance and security related software. Windows utilities are also among of the most profitable affiliate products available today and computer related websites can often sell large quantities of these products without spending any resources on expensive marketing efforts.

LI Utilities Inc is a Swedish software company that offers a line of utilities suited for home users as well professionals. Our products range from SpeedUpMyPC which is a performance optimization tool for home users to WinBackup which offers fully automatic backups to CD or network folders while being incredibly easy to use. Our affiliate program gives anyone with a good website the opportunity to take advantage of our award winning products and turning their site into a profitable online business. Since we prefer having a smaller number of very successful affiliates our marketing staff will work closely with all affiliates to develop an efficient marketing strategy for each site, resulting in larger sales volumes per site and higher commission rates. Because of our close cooperation with all affiliates and resellers our products are quickly becoming among the most profitable affiliate products available. To get new affiliates started as quickly as possible we also offer ready to use marketing material and personal marketing assistance to affiliate sites within days of signing up for our partner program. If you have a medium sized or large site with a few thousand visitors per month this is your opportunity to turn your site into a profitable business and your time into money. How To use Split-Run Testing to Raise Your Conversion Rates
By Merle

Have= you ever heard the phrase "split-run testing?" No? If you have a website and you're trying to sell something online, you need to know about this valuable testing process that can increase your bottom line.

Split-run testing is where you create different versions of a sales page (for example) to test its effectiveness. When users enters your site, they're shown one version or the other. Once you do this enough times you can easily see which version converted visitors into buying customers. Are you following me here?

The benefits of split-run testing are many. You can see at a glance what's working and what isn't. By testing different versions of your copy and tracking what converts, you can make permanent changes and see an increase in your sales with the same amount of traffic. When you improve your conversion rates, the money you spend on marketing will work harder for you as more of your site's visitors make the leap from browsers into buyers.

If your sales copy is ineffective, all the traffic in the world will not increase your sales activity. By testing and tracking and finding out what does and doesn't work, you can incorporate changes that are proven winners and make more money. Sound good? Of course it does.

So what kinds of things might you want to test? Some people might start with two different versions of their sales letter (for example, your home page). Then once they finish testing the copy itself, run tests on more specific elements like including more or less testimonials, the headline, adding a Post Script or not, etc.

There are many different factors that you can test, but for the most accurate measuring results, the trick is to test only one component at a time. You'll also want to allow each test to run to between 500 to 1000 unique visitors before coming to any conclusions.

It's time to change! Get more sales with the all-new IBP 3!

Why is IBP 3 better than other web site promotion software tools?

There are 8 good reasons why you should switch to IBP 3, the next-generation web site promotion tool. Benefit from more visitors and more sales.

Click her= e for more information. Save money! Free trial!

Here are some things you might want to test:

- Your Headlines
- Different Design Elements of Your Site (i.e., fonts, colors, etc.)
- Sales Letter
- Navigation Structure of Your Site
- Bonus Offers
- Pricing Points (high or low)
- Long Copy Versus Short Copy
- Different Advertising Strategies such as banners,
ezine a= ds, pay per click copy
- Openings/Closings
- Order Forms

So now that you have a clear idea of what "split-run" testing is, how do you do it? There are many different software packages out there that can do the job for you.

Let's review some options:

1) Split Test Generator:
http://splittestgenerator.com

This script is free to download and once it's installed on your server, you simply enter two web addresses into a form and press submit to start the testing process.

2) Scientific Internet Marketing Assista= nt:
http://www.marketing-strate= gy.org

Created by Duncan Carver, who is an absolute genius when it comes to online marketing. It's hard to believe he gives this software away for free, but he does. It allows you to run multiple tests simultaneously, broken down into individual campaigns. You can test five different test subjects against each other at once.

If you need help with installation or have some questions on the script's workings go to Duncan's forum http://www.market= ing-strategy.org/forums/ You'll find plenty of other test users willing to answer your questions or provide assistance.

3) Sales PageMaster Pro:
http://salespagemasterpro.com

This $149 software package runs on UNIX systems. You'll need access to your CGI bin and the ability to run Server Side Includes on your site. You decide what to track, actual subscriptions, sales, etc. You can also enforce a fixed deadline for special offers.

4) Split Hit
http://splithit.com

Install this $29.95 PHP database driven software and it will automatically rotate different versions of your website, so you can see at a glance which ones are outperforming the others.

5) Scientific Web Marketing System
http://profitinfo.com/catal= og/v4/

A script that runs on your server and is UNIX based. This software works by constantly displaying different versions of the same web page at the same url. Comes with a 60-day money_back guarantee and sells for only $37.97.

As you can see, testing and tracking what works and what doesn't isn't that hard -- and can save you a lot of money in the end. Without testing, you have no way of knowing what's working with your marketing efforts, and that's like playing pool in the dark. You might be able to feel your way around, but you'll have no way of knowing if you're aiming in the right direction when it comes to sinking the ball in the pocket.

Converting visitors into buyers is the name of the game online. Isn't it time you found out if all your hard work is paying off?

How To Recover Your 'Almost Customers'
By Bob Leduc

You'= ll always need to find new prospects for your business. But don't overlook the prospects you already attracted. Many are close to buying. Use these four simple procedures to convert those "almost customers" into paying customers.

1. Make A Memorable Impression

Create a reason for prospects and customers to notice you ...and to think of you when they encounter a competitor.

Many prospects who do not buy from you the first time will come back to buy later. Existing customers will also remember you. They'll come back to buy again - and they'll send pre-sold referrals to you.

One easy way to establish a memorable identity is to create an important reason for customers to do business with you instead of with your competitors.

The advantage you offer doesn't have to be dramatic to be memorable IF you promote it aggressively. It can be as simple as delivering faster results, more personalized attention or a better guarantee than your competitors.

Tip: Combine several small advantages like those described above to create a big (and more memorable) advantage over your competitors.

2. Follow Up Consistently

Most prospects do not buy the first time they see or hear about you. But they will if you follow up with them.

Your follow up can be as simple as contacting them occasionally with a new offer. Or it can be more complex such as publishing a weekly newsletter with useful information and articles.

If you don't already have a way to collect their address, you can get it by offering a valuable gift that you deliver only by email or postal mail.

For example, offer a special report, a list of sources or some other valuable information they cannot get anywhere else. These are valuable to customers and prospects - but they won't cost you much to provide.

3. Make Sure You Answer These 7 Buyer's Ques= tions

Prospective customers will not buy from you until all 7 of the following questions are answered. Customers may not consciously think about these questions. But they will not buy until all 7 are answered in their minds:

1) Exactly what are you offering?
2) Why do I need (or want) it?
3) How can I believe your claims?
4) Why should I get it from you?
5) How fast can I get it?
6) What if I don't like it after I get it?
7) What do I need to do to get it?

Make sure you answer all 7 of these buyer's questions in your web site, sales letters and other selling tools.

Tip: Present everything in term of the benefit it provides to customers. For example, don't just list testimonials from satisfied customers (your answer to question 3). Point out that those testimonials prove you really do deliver what you promise.

4. Keep Your Ordering Procedure Simple

Use an uncomplicated and fast ordering procedure. Every additional action you ask customers to perform and every additional decision you ask them to make after they already decided to buy can cause them to reverse their decision.

For example, many online marketers use a shopping cart to process their orders when they could use a simple online order form. Each unnecessary step in the shopping cart process is an opportunity for customers to abandon their order ...a sale lost needlessly.

Tip: Don't ask for unnecessary information during the ordering process. Instead, send a personalized "thank you" message after the sale and include a brief request for the additional information.

Don't overlook the easy sales you can get from old prospects that are almost ready to buy? Use these 4 simple procedures to cultivate your "almost customers" and turn them into paying customers.

10 Ways To Build Trust And Build Your Business
By Charlie Cook

You = wouldn't buy a car if you didn't think it could get you home. And you wouldn't purchase it from a dealer you thought was robbing you blind on the price and might not stand behind it if the engine fell out as you drove it off the lot.

Before making a purchase from you, buyers need to trust that your products and services will do what they are supposed to. Does your marketing help establish the trust necessary to convince prospects to buy from you? If you're struggling to attract clients and customers, use the following tactics to convert prospects to clients.

1. Get Testimonials
No matter how great your credentials are or how much experience you've had, people pay more attention to what OTHERS have to say about you.

Pick up the phone and call your customers to ask what
they thought of your product or service, what they liked about it and how it was helpful. Edit their comments, get their permission to use the comments and then feature these testimonials in your marketing materials.

2. Use Articles Instead Of Ads
We have come to distrust ads and to believe what we read in published articles. Invest your time in writing articles to establish yourself as an expert. If you run ads, include testimonials in them.

3. Give Something Away
When you give something to people, regardless of the cost, they are more likely to trust you and return the favor by buying something from you. Use an ebook, article, workshop or free demonstration to build trust.

3D"Do

4. Get Referrals
When you need a new doctor, lawyer, plumber, carpenter or a place to eat you ask a friend for a referral. You trust the recommendations of people you know, and in fact, that's how the majority of people find jobs. Don't wait for the occasional referral to come in spontaneously; implement a proactive system to generate referrals.

5. Exchange Endorsements
Team up with a business you trust that also targets your market. Get them to include an endorsement of your products and services in their marketing and do the same for them. While a personal referral is ideal, an endorsement is a close second. This tactic can double your marketing reach at zero cost.

6. Give Examples
Tell a story instead of making impersonal and dramatic claims of what you or your product does. Use case studies to tell what you did for whom and the difference it made in their life or their business.

7. Personalize Your Marketing
Its a common misperception that to sound credible your marketing should be dry and impersonal. People do business with people. You need to help prospects get to know you and trust you. Let your passion and personality come across in your marketing as well as your professionalism. Include a picture of yourself, with a smile, in a prominent place on the first page of your marketing materials.

8. Reduce Perceived Risk
Buyers' biggest concern is how well your product or service will perform. Providing a guarantee may help, but in most cases its not going to make the sale. Clarify the value you provide and state your commitment to seeing that your clients are not only happy, but ecstatic about your product and services.

9. Make Contact Easy
If you want clients to get in touch with you, show them how. Put your phone number at the top of your marketing materials and tell them to call. When you call them, give them your phone number again at the end of the conversation and tell them to call. If you have a web site, put a contact form at the bottom of your home page.

10. Stay In Touch
The people you see and talk to on a regular basis are usually the ones you trust the most. Communication isn't the only ingredient for developing trust, but it is a critical one. If you sell services or high end products, a personal phone call is one of the best ways to answer prospects questions, and to establish trust. Contact your prospects and clients regularly and get feedback on what they are concerned about.

You want to convert prospects to clients and clients to repeat clients. Use these ten marketing tactics to build trust and you'll find more prospects buying your products and services.

Google's Next Big Move
By David Leonhardt

(Will your website be ready, or will you be playing catch-up six months too late?)

Nove= mber 2003 might go down in history as the month that Google shook a lot of smug webmasters and search engine optimization (SEO) specialists from the apple tree. But more than likely, it was just a precursor of the BIG shakeup to come.

Google touts highly its secret PageRank algorithm. Although PageRank is just one factor in choosing what sites appear on a specific search, it is the main way that Google determines the "importance" of a website.

In recent months, SEO specialists have become expert at manipulating PageRank, particularly through link exchanges.

There is nothing wrong with links. They make the Web a web rather than a series of isolated islands. However, PageRank relies on the naturally "democratic" nature of the web, whereby webmasters link to sites they feel are important for their visitors. Google rightly sees link exchanges designed to boost PageRank as stuffing the ballot box.

I was not surprised to see Google try to counter all the SEO efforts. In fact, I have been arguing the case with many non- believing SEO specialists over the past couple months. But I was surprised to see the clumsy way in which Google chose to do it.

Google targeted specific search terms, including many of the most competitive and commercial terms. Many websites lost top positions in five or six terms, but maintain their positions in several others. This had never happened before. Give credit to Barry Lloyd of www.SearchEngineGuide.com for cleverly uncovering the process.

For Google, this shakeup is just a temporary fix. It will have to make much bigger changes if it is serious about harnessing the "democratic" nature of the Web and neutralizing the artificial results of so many link exchanges.

Here are a few techniques Google might use (remember to think like a search engine):

1. Google might start valuing inbound li= nks within paragraphs much higher than links that stand on their own. (For all we know, Google is already doing this.) Such links are much less likely to be the product of a link exchange, and therefore more likely to be genuine "democratic" votes.

2. Google might look at the concentratio= n of inbound links across a website. If most inbound links point to the home page, that is another possible indicator of a link exchange, or at least that the site's content is not important enough to draw inbound links (and it is content that Google wants to deliver to its searchers).

3. Google might take a sample of inbound= links to a domain, and check to see how many are reciprocated back to the linking domains. If a high percentage are reciprocated, Google might reduce the site's PageRank accordingly. Or it might set a cut- point, dropping from its index any website with too many of its inbound links reciprocated.

4. Google might start valuing outbound l= inks more highly. Two pages with 100 inbound links are, in theory, valued equally, even if one has 20 outbound links and the other has none. But why should Google send its searchers down a dead-end street, when the information highway is paved just as smoothly on a major thoroughfare?

5. Google might weigh a website's outbou= nd link concentration. A website with most outbound links concentrated on just a few pages is more likely to be a "link-exchanger" than a site with links spread out across its pages.

Google might use a combination of these techniques and ones not mentioned here. We cannot predict the exact algorithm, nor can we assume that it will remain constant. What we can do is to prepare our websites to look and act like a website would on a "democratic" Web as Google would see it.

For Google to hold its own against upstart search engines, it must deliver on its PageRank promise. Its results reflect the "democratic" nature of the Web. Its algorithm must prod webmasters to give links on their own merit. That won't be easy or even completely possible. And people will always find ways to turn Google's algorithm to their advantage. But the techniques above can send the Internet a long way back to where Google promises it will be.

The time is now to start preparing your website for the changes to come.

poetry
a way to relieve the pain
burning my skin
a way to relieve the pain
all the time i take to waste away
casts a shadow over me
why can't i find who i am
this world is filled with to much
to much pain and to much hate
i bottle it all into my little soul
and into my little head
weighed down with all these woes
can't seem to find a way to lift it up
with every passing day
i find a new way to relieve the pain
till death is my only escape
my last chance to relieve the pain

here's one new one

Buzzwords vs Effective SEO Keywords
By Daria Goetsch

Ever= see a website that seems to speak a foreign language...in English? We encounter many SEO client websites that rely on buzzwords in the page copy to get the word out about their product. The problem lies with visitors who may not be familiar with those terms. This means optimizing with buzzwords may not be the best way to gain traffic. If your prospective visitors are not searching for those terms, how do they find your website?

Start With The Obvious

You really need to know your industry. Study your prospective visitors--who your target audience is. If your prospective visitors are highly technical and work and talk in "buzzword speak", no problem. But if you also want to attract prospective visitors who may not be immersed in the terminology used in your business, you must compensate by optimizing with a wider array of targeted keywords.

How Do I Find All Those Keywords?

Start researching. Yes, it's going to take a little work on your part to take a close look at what keywords you may be missing out on. Keep account of prospective website visitors who may use other terms to find your website. Track the keywords used by visitors through your log reports. Most log statistics programs have a report showing the keywords used by searchers to find your website. Using your server logs or log statistics program for keyword information is a good way to get a better picture of how visitors are finding your website. Use Overture's keyword tool or Wordtracker and note the words used on your competitors' websites. Using these, or similar tools, type in your buzzwords and see what variations come up. Competitor websites may use a slightly different language than you when writing copy for their pages. Visit their websites and learn all you can about how many ways your business can get its message across. Read online articles; visit business newsgroups and forums. Find research information through industry websites and companies that specialize in producing reports about your industry.

Help Search Engine Robots Do Their Job

Search engine robots are just automated programs. Their concept and execution is relatively simple: search engine robots "read" the text on your pages by going through the source code of your web pages. If the majority of the words in your source code text are buzzwords, this is the information that will be taken back to the search engine database.

It's Obvious (the "DUH" factor)

Ok, so it's obvious to you what your industry buzzwords are. But don't discount the simpler versions of those catchy words. Focus also on some lesser used terms and make a list of additional keywords you might be able to add. Clear, precise copy that catches the visitor's attention and tells your story is generally more effective in the long run.

Compromise - Mix SEO Keywords and Buzzwords

You don't want to change the copy on your webpages? This is often a problem with business websites. Once you have your keyword list of other-than-obvious words, work at fitting them into the page text carefully. You want them to make sense with the context of the web page. Use these new keywords as many times as "makes sense" so they do not sound spammy. Read your copy out loud or have a colleague read your copy to get a sense of how it might sound to a website visitor.

The Bottom Line

It should be easy enough to see how those extra keywords are producing for you. Keep track of your log reports and see if those new terms start showing up in your reports. Test a variety of keywords, then test again to see if visitors are staying on your website, moving through your individual web pages, or clicking away. Create specific pages using those keywords as a test scenario. The information you need should be available to you in your log statistics reports for visited web pages.

Don't let business jargon get in the way of getting your message across to your audience. Yes, buzzwords may sound cutting edge, but the bottom line is, traffic and sales are what you really want to show for your hard work.

Search Engine Predictions for 2004
by Mike Banks Valentine

Afte= r being asked to contribute some predictions for 2004 to a search engine newsletter, I found it so much fun to make my search cynicism tangible that I took it seriously.

What follows is at once silly and deadly serious as it simply follows the trends we've all seen over the past year. It is apparent that if things don't change these things WILL happen. This is really just an excuse to talk about Google in a long- winded way. ;-)

1. Yahoo integrates it's purchases of Ov= erture, Inktomi, AltaVista from it's buying spree in 2003 in an attempt to become a true competitor to the ailing (Florida ravaged) Google. First attempts look something like AskJeeves with 15 paid results dominating the screen, both top and bottom and right side of the SERP's. Then they realize that people want more organic (free, non-sponsored) search results and drop back to the simple Google-like screen for search with Inktomi results. But then the Overture results go to a new 250x800 skyscraper box incorporating flash based blinking, spinning borders on the left side of the screen. Every remaining search engine not already owned by Yahoo will be purchased by Yahoo, including Google (see prediction #3).

2. MSN officially launches MSN search ba= sed on their own technology (mid to late 2004). After some AskJeeves-like attempts to show paid results for the majority of the SERP screen real estate, they realize nobody trusts this model and decide to go to a Google-like spare screen with only Overture results on the right and two paid results clearly labled at the top of the page. Since dropping Looksmart paid results in January, they announce they've been developing their own PPC engine and will spend 6 billion dollars in developing it over the next ten years, incorporating search into the Longhorn operating system - delayed again year-end to make security upgrades.

3. Google's IPO fizzles after the new no= n-relevant search results cause searchers to stop using them entirely. When they announce they've gone back to the pre-Florida algorithm, they gain back their die-hard fans. But it seems like too little, too late for most of the remaining public. Then suddenly, open source search engine "Nutch" launches a massive campaign to become the Google replacement. Nutch.com is an overnight success and becomes the new worldwide favorite. Yahoo makes a buyout offer for Nutch and MSN announces they'll develop their own . . . oops, not open source - it'll incorporate .Net, be called .Netch and will be tied to Longhorn. Yahoo buys Google data centers and hardware at firesale prices after hiring the star staff right before a Google Bankruptcy is announced.

----------------------

The last prediction is heretical to search afficianados but I contend that Google has reached the end of their useful life when they go public with that IPO. The much beloved "Don't be evil" of Sergey Brin and Larry Page will go right out the door when they begin answering to the stock market rather than their consciences. Take a look at the famous "Don't be evil" reference from the founders of Google at:

http:/= /www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.01/google_pr.html

Comments have been tossed about that the Google "Florida" update in November was a conspiracy to gain Adwords customers. I don't believe that one for a minute, but two theories I've seen do seem credible. One says that Google is incorporating the technology from the recent acquisition of Applied Semantics into search results. More at:

http= ://searchengineguide.com/hotchkiss/2003/1215_gh1.html

Another theory says that Google's PageRank patent is owned by Standford University and NOT Google, so they had to pull it out of the algorithm before going public. That would surely explain some poor search results if it were true!

http://jimworld.com/gaz= ette/issue-208/

The PageRank patent, #6,285,999 can be viewed here:

http://tinyurl.com/2m8sk

Whatever follows in 2004 will certainly be entertaining.

The upstart http://www.nutch.com notw= ithstanding.

May your search results bring you happiness!

SEO Copywriting - In the Wake of the "Florida" Update
by Karon Thackston

Afte= r Google's most recent update, those in the search engine optimization (SEO) field seem to be standing at attention. As sites that have held long-standing positions in the top 10 flounder and bob around in the search results like a fishing cork in a pond, many are scrambling for answers about what to do next. I've been asked for my opinions about changes in search engine copywriting, so I thought I'd share some of my insights.

Just like the SEOs whose editorials and interviews you've recently read, I too am expressing opinions here. Nobody knows for sure what has happened or what Google plans to do in the future. However, based on what I've seen so far, I do have some observations to share in response to a few commonly asked questions.

Many are saying that 'over-optimized' sites are being = penalized. Should I reduce the keyword saturation on my pages?

The changes at Google this go 'round have nothing to do with a penalty; it's simply an algorithm change. No penalties, no punishments, etc. Over saturation of keywords has always been bad, however, many were getting away with it pre-Florida. I have never been a fan of "shoving" keywords into your copy wherever you have an extra syllable. Keeping an acceptable level of keyword saturation is still important. Just don't overdo it. Remember, your ultimate goal should be to write for your human visitors... not the search engine spiders.

Case in point: Do a Google search for the term "website design". At the time of this article, I clicked through to many of the sites returned in the top 10. As I read through the home pages of these sites, I noticed how often they repeated the keyphrase "website design". These pages had a good level of saturation. Not too heavy, not too light.

Unless yours is one of those sites where every third word is a keyword/phrase, I would not recommend changing the level of keyword saturation at this point.

There have been reports of Google moving to a semantic= -based system. Does this mean keywords will no longer be used?

In my opinion, the reports are true... Google is moving to a semantic-type system. But that doesn't mean keywords are on their way out at all. After the changes are made, Google will be going beyond *just* looking for keywords on your page. They'll want well-written copy... actual language that speaks to your site visitors. That means your copy will take on a more important role than ever before. And that's great news!

For those of us who have been focusing on search engine copywriting that appeals to both the engines and the site visitors, Google's upcoming changes should be very exciting.

I have a couple of other common-sense thoughts on this topic as well.

START YOUR OWN DATING SERVICE

Profit from the booming online dating market.
Easy, customizable, no setup fees.

www.datingrev.com

Searchers will continue to type in search strings that bring up what they are looking for. While I have noticed the keyphrases getting longer over time, I have not read any research that states searchers have begun typing "wood, nails and glass" when they are actually hoping to find mirrors.

Common sense tells me that keyphrases will always be a determining factor in generating accurate search results.

The other common-sense aspect that comes to mind is that when Google moves to semantic search results, keyword saturation will become even more important. How will the spiders know what to gauge their semantic results by if there are no keywords included in your copy? Yes, semantics means that other types of verbiage need to be included, too... but -- as I said earlier -- hasn't that always been the case?

Some people have said that Google is now favoring info= rmation sites and information pages. Should I write more information-based copy for my site?

While *some* search results for *some* keyphrases do seem to be filled primarily with information-based directory sites (those that do not attempt to sell), it is not the norm. Google understands that over 85% of people looking to make a purchase turn to search engines. While information-filled pages definitely satisfy a need for the first part of the buying process, they don't replace retail sites.

People will continue to research and make purchases online. This means they'll want to see retail and other business sites returned in their search results. If they don't get what they're looking for, they'll simply use another search engine.

So, to answer the question, I've always thought (and so has Google) you should include information pages on your site. Gathering information was, is and will always be a part of the buying process. If you currently don't have information pages on your site, yes, add some. But not because you think Google might approve... because your visitors will.

Just like the demise of most META tags, and just like Google practically ignoring ALT/image tags, "tricks" come and go. Write your copy primarily to impress your site visitors. Making drastic changes - unless they are based on a need by your target audience - is not a move I recommend.

Overall, it will take some time for any definite/solid information to filter down about the true effects of the "Florida" update. Theories will continue to swirl around the 'Net. So will rankings! But the fact remains that "common-sense" SEO copywriting wins out in the long run.

Top Tips to Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Success

Top Tips to Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Success
by Ben Chapi

Pay-= per-click (PPC) search engines are a highly effective and inexpensive way to attract targeted traffic to your web site. With the most popular PPC search engines (www.overture.com and www.adwords.google.com) you can often buy this search engine traffic for 10 cents or 5 cents per click. It is possible to bid for keywords for as little as $0.01 per click with some of the less popular PPC search engines! This means that you can get 500 visitors to your website for just $5!

Below are some strategies that you can use to consistently get a steady flow of traffic to your website and increase your sales.

1. Focus on one item or product that you want to promote
Promoting your entire list of programs or products will be more expensive and get you less targeted traffic. Instead, choose a product and promote that. You can promote other products or programs separately. Each click through should direct your visitor to the specific program or product that you're selling. This will ensure that you will have less competition in bidding for very focused keywords and a higher likelihood of reaching really interested customers. Avoid directing your customers to a web page that is likely to confuse them or where they'll have to start looking for the advertised product. Most customers simply do not have the time.

2. Find out what the traffic is like for your desired keywords.
Most pay per click search engines have a page where you can see what and how many times a keyword was searched for in the previous month. Remember a keyword that was popular in June may not be as popular in July or August. These reports must be used as a guide. I have found that any relevant keyword attracting more than 50 clicks per month is worth bidding on.

3. Strategize before placing your bid.

Now that you know what you want to promote and what keywords to use, you need an effective strategy to make your campaign profitable. As a general guide, avoid bids that are too high unless you have a huge advertising budget and your product converts well. Instead, aim to bid for less popular low-cost, relevant keywords. They produce a better return than the popular ones.

4. For the more popular keywords, bid for a lower and less expensive position
When you search on a keyword, most PPC search engine results will also show you what each advertiser is paying for their position. Remember you don't always have to be first. If one advertiser is paying $0.25 for the first position and the second advertiser is paying $0.12, you can get third place for only $0.11. A good tip is to aim for the first page, even if you're in position 15! Most surfers quickly scroll through the entire page and they do not necessarily click on the first or second listing!

Research has shown that listings at the top and bottom of the page are more likely to be noticed than those in the middle. With Google Adwords, increasing either your maximum cost-per-click (CPC) or your ad's clickthrough rate (CTR) will improve your ad's position.

5. Write interesting ad copy
The headline and copy of your text are your one shot at getting leads and customers interested. You want to tell them what you are promoting and why they should visit your site. Remember the goal is interested customers (good leads) not just anybody. Give your potential customers an added incentive by giving away something FREE!. PEOPLE LOVE FREE STUFF! You can also include deadlines and discounts information when applicable. With the Google Adwords program, you can do this in real time.

6. Only bid on keywords that are relevant to your campaign.
This point cannot be over-empasized. All the Pay-per-click search engines have rules concerning how relevant keyword bids are. Generally, you cannot bid on keywords that have nothing to do with what they are linking to. In any case, bidding on words that are not related to your promotion is a bad strategy. It may result in clicks that you pay for, but that do not bring interested customers or leads.

7. Bid on as many relevant keywords as you can.

You catch more fish with a net than you do with a single line. You can often get great, targeted clicks for only a penny or less if you bid on less popular but relevant keywords. If you take the time to bid on a few words a day, you'll have a powerful, inexpensive campaign running within a few days. Don't forget to try it out at more than one PPC Search Engine as well.

8. Track your keywords and your entire marketing campaign.
You can do this by checking your Reports. Each pay-per-click service offers reports. These will tell you how well each keyword is driving traffic. You can then fine-tune your efforts by changing the value of your bids or adding and deleting keywords. Regularly Check your keyword position and do a lookup on your keywords. If you have picked popular words, you will notice that your bids will change position as others bid on them as well. Expect results that match your effort.

If you take a little extra time to apply these points, you should see good results within a short period of time, depending on your efforts.

Someone has said that pay-per-click search engines (like all Internet marketing efforts) are like fishing. You must cast hundreds of times to get a few fish. So be patient and remember that using pay-per-click advertising, like ezine advertising, is an effective approach that can increase sales at a very low cost.

7 Steps To Web Sites That Sell

7 Steps To Web Sites That Sell
By Charlie Cook

Your web site is like a flight of stairs into your business. Once you've got prospects to your home page - your online front door - you want to move them to action. If you miss a step or two, prospects will fall and won't make it in the door to your business. If you put the last step first and your first step last, prospects won't find the steps you want them to take.

There is a hierarchy of information and elements you need to present to prospects to make it easy for them to become customers and clients. This is not what most small business owners provide on their web sites. Most sites lead with a boring description of services and credentials. This tends to push prospects away.

Before you build your web site or start to fix a site that isn't attracting as many clients as you'd like, take a minute to clarify the objectives of your site. Marketing objectives for web sites for most independent professionals and small business owners should be:

a. Lead Generation - Build your list of qualified prospects who are interested in your products and services but not quite ready to make a purchase. First time visitors to the site need to be able to quickly identity if they are in the right place and determine whether you can help them. Make it easy for prospects to qualify themselves.

b. Establish Credibility- If people found your site by searching the web, you have a lot of work to do to prove that you can help them and deliver on what the site promises.

c. Sell Your Products and Services - Of course you will want to include information about your products and services, but if you rush this step, you'll lose prospects before you've created the context that will move them to a purchase.

Putting Your Steps In Sequence
Now that you know what you want your web site to do, define the key elements that should be on your home page. Put these in the correct sequence and more prospects will do what you want. You'll generate more leads and more sales. Here's how.

1. Feature Your Marketing Message
At the top of your home page include a one sentence marketing message that describes what you actually do and the problems you solve. For example, "Helping service professionals and small business owners attract more clients" or "Helping you create the ultimate personalized trip to Britain".

2. Collect Leads
Place the sign-up for your free newsletter, ebook, or catalogue at the top of your web page. The right hand top corner is the optimal position. Above the sign-up form don't just say "Enter your email here for complimentary information". Make an offer, one that will motivate your prospects to give you their contact information. For example, "Sign Up for Britain's best travel secrets." As an incentive on my site I offer a free marketing guide to motivate people to subscribe to my newsletter, with the result that 12-15% of site visitors sign up for my ezine.

3. Use Qualifying Questions
Don't start with a description of your services or products. Below your marketing message, lead with qualifying questions, that will help prospects understand the problems you solve, engage your visitors' attention and create a perception of need.

For example, if you sell ergonomic chairs, you could ask, "Does your back ache at the end of a day at your desk?" Or if you sell customized travel services to Britain you could ask, "Are you interested in a customized, hassle f*ree va*cation in the British Isles?"

4. Build Credibility
One-way to do this is to include testimonials from satisfied clients. People will read your marketing copy with a grain - or a whole shaker - of salt. When people read what others say about the amazing results you achieve, they are much more likely to believe your claims. Limit your testimonials to ones that are easy to believe, even if you did help someone make ten million dollars.

The second part of establishing your credibility is to demonstrate the value of your expertise by providing prospects with helpful ideas. If you're in the computer repair and maintenance business you might include tips on identifying software conflicts and keeping computers from crashing.

People like to do business with people they know and trust so use your site to bring your company and personality to life. Include links to your articles, case studies and /or product demonstrations. Add a photo of yourself or your employees to personalize your site and move prospects to thinking of you as a person.

3D""   3D""

5. Show Prospects The Results You Are Selling
Include thumbnails of products and services people can click on in a side navigation bar on most of your site's pages. Whatever you sell make sure to feature both visual and verbal testimonials along with information and images of your products and services.

On your individual service or product pages provide examples of clients and customers using your services or products. For ebooks, include tables of contents and sample chapters. If you sell log homes, include pictures of happy customers in their homes. If you sell information, feature client testimonials.

6. Tell Prospects What To Do
If you want people to sign up for your newsletter, tell them to. To get people to read the articles on your site, tell them to. To increase the number of people who view the pages describing your products and services, include thumbnail images of your products and tell them to click on the image for further information. If there is a particular sequence of steps you want prospects to take, tell them what they are.

7. Make It Easy For Prospects
Place your contact information, including email address and phone number in an obvious location on every page, particularly the home page. Include a link to a contact form or place it at the bottom of your home page, or both.

In your form, ask a few key questions to help prospects clarify what it is they want to achieve and get their phone number so you can follow up. Their responses will help you prioritize who to contact and help you focus on your most profitable prospects.

Show prospects who are ready to engage your services or buy your products how to do so. Coaches will want to include a coaching inquiry form. People who sell greeting cards, should include a quick link to so people can place their orders.

Use the blueprint above to construct a web site that sells. Build steps that will lead prospects into your web site and motivate them to give you their name, email address and phone number or to contact you about your services or to buy your products. Build steps that will move them from prospects to clients and customers.
